This week our community garden was featured in the Oklahoma Gazette cover story Growklahoma City! Urban Farmers Cultivate Community and a Connection to the Land by Greg Elwell.
Here’s an excerpt:
Planning Midtown’s Urban Neighbors community garden is more of a group effort, said garden co-chairwoman Shelley Pruitt. When the group meets March 11, members will pick and plan what to grow in the 10 raised-bed gardens for the next year.
Every Saturday, the group meets at 417 W. Park Place to work and welcome newcomers. The garden started in 2013, a few years after Pruitt moved downtown.
Please pick up a copy of this week’s Gazette and read the full article!
Also, please join us on March 11th to work the garden. Fill out the interest form to let us know to expect you!
Join your neighbors along our western boundary in the up-and-coming SoSA neighborhood of OKC at ¡Revolución! Taqueria & Cantina — a taco and tequila focused, high-energy, late-night eats & drinks destination.
Driven by authentic Mexican ingredients and preparation methods, the concept thrives on innovative, playful cocktails around the 24-seat island bar and the perfect party-style patio to imbibe and indulge ’til your heart’s content.
Thank you so much to our annual general meeting host [ARTSPACE] at UNTITLED, our now traditional annual speaker, Steve Lackmeyer, for giving us so much of his time and attention each year, and our door prize donor, Lifesquire. If you haven’t visited UNTITLED recently, you should consider not only revisiting, but returning regularly given the number of programs they have, and this is not even to mention their new retail space, [HIVE] at UNTITLED.
So you didn’t make it to the AGM? Here are the highlights of what you missed (or view the full presentation):
- WE STILL NEED BOARD MEMBERS! If you are a UN member and have a couple spare hours a month, please consider contacting us to let us know you’d like to help.
- The Urban Garden Kick-Off is March 11th, sign-up to work it!
- Our Spring Wine Dinner is March 29th at Red PrimeSteak, buy tickets while they last!
- The GO Bond election is as important as MAPS, make sure you learn and VOTE!
Please join your neighbors on Thursday, February 9th, 2017 for our Annual General Meeting at [Artspace] at Untitled, 1 NE 3rd Street, in the heart of Deep Deuce. Housed in one of the neighborhood’s few remaining original buildings, the warehouse sat vacant for 30 years before being converted into the community-based contemporary arts center.
Each year at our AGM, we nominate and vote on new board members & make any needed updates to our bylaws. If you are interested in serving on the board or have suggestions on the bylaws, please email us. Members who pay their 2017 dues online by February 1st, will receive 2 free drink tickets.
After the brief business meeting, we will hear from our special guest, Steve Lackmeyer, reporter at the Oklahoman & author of several books about Downtown OKC’s renaissance.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided by our host, and a CASH bar will be available.
Please join your neighbors on Thursday, January 12, 2017, as we visit one of downtown’s most unique gems, the Ambassador Hotel at 1200 North Walker. Situated within the beautifully renovated Osler Building. Midtown’s only hotel caters to guests seeking the very best in luxury and sophistication. Consistent with the Ambassador Collection’s dedication to preserving and celebratting its properties’ historic legacies, the hotel has retained its 1920’s era Art Deco architecture and charm.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided & a CASH bar will be available (note that the bar will not be accepting non-cash payment).
We noted previously that there would be at least one GO Bond workshop per ward in the coming months, and the downtown ward (6 and 7) meetings have been announced. Please try to attend!
- The Ward 6 meeting will be Wednesday, January 25th, at Leadership Square (211 North Robinson) from 11am to 2pm.
- The Ward 7 meeting will be Tuesday, February 28th, at Metro Tech Springlake (1900 Springlake Drive) from 5pm to 8pm.
You are not restricted to attending any or all of the ward meetings, so if you’re just after information or have questions, feel free to attend any of the other meetings that might fit better into your schedule.
Do you live downtown? In particular, do you live in Ward 7 downtown (see the interactive ward map if you’re unsure)? If so, if you qualify, and if you have been hankering for more involvement in your city government, now is your chance! The filling dates to run for the Ward 7 city council seat are NEXT WEEK (12/5-7)! More information is available on the city website.
Please join your neighbors on Thursday, December 8, 2016, as we visit one of Downtown OKC’s newest urban living options, the Metropolitan Apartments at 800 North Oklahoma Avenue. The fusion of modern design, location and technology, all with an urban twist, make the Metropolitan the ideal destination to call home.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided & our hosts will be offering tours.
